An American friend has invited you to visit his family. You’ve never been to an American’s home before, and you are not sure what to do. Don’t worry! When you’re the guest, you should just make yourself at home.

The question of whether or not to bring a gift often gives guests a headache. In American culture, it’s not a must-do thing to bring a present. Of course, some people do bring some small gifts like flowers, candies or—if the family has small children-toys. If you choose not to bring a gift, don’t worry. No one will even notice.

American hospitality(好客)begins at home. Most Americans agree that good home cooking beats restaurant food any day. When invited for a meal, you might ask.

“Can I bring anything?” If it’s not a potluck, where everyone brings a dish, the host will possibly answer, “No, just yourself.” For most informal dinners, you can just wear comfortable clothes. Remember to arrive on time, or call to tell your hosts that you may be late.

During the dinner conversation, it’s polite to say the food is nice. After dinner, you can help clear the table or wash the dishes. But since you are the guest, your hosts may not let you. Instead, they may invite everyone to move to the living room to drink some tea or coffee. If the hosts are not smokers, you shouldn’t smoke in their house. And, above all, don’t go around looking at the house if you are not invited. After about an hour of chat, it’s time to say good-bye. You don’t want to wear out your welcome.

59. In American culture, it’s NOT OK to  .

Do you believe that only boys do well in science? Does it seem to you that girls have better language skills than boys? In your opinion, are boys better at building things? If your answer to each of those questions is “Yes,” you are right, according to an article in Current Science.” There are exceptions(例外), but here are the facts.

Usually, boys score higher on tests about math, while girls do better in tests about words, spelling and memory. But these differences may not always be true. In the future, a person’s abilities may not be decided by sex. As one scientist says, “Nothing is impossible for a person to be or do.”

A recent study by Jerome Kagan, a scientist at Harward University is studying the watching ability of children 10 months old. Baby boys and baby girls are watching a “show” while seated on their mothers’ laps. In Act I of the show, an orange-colored hall is lifted from a blue box and moved slowly. Then it is returned to the box. This is repeated six times. Act II is almost the same, except that the orange ball is smaller.

Baby boys do not seem to notice the difference in the size of the ball, but girls immediately become excited and begin to make noises that sound like language.

It’s also known that baby girls usually talk at an earlier age than baby boys do. Scientists believe that the left side of the brain develops faster in girls than in boys. As a result, by the time they start to school, little girls have an advantage that boys don’t have, but what have the boys been doing in the year before starting school? They have been developing something called aggression. An aggressive person feels strong and independent. He is often the first one to start a fight. It is said that aggression is caused by hormones(荷尔蒙).Scientists believe that hormones are not the only cause. They say aggression in boys is also caused by mothers.

63. Where does this text possibly come from?

B. A newspaper on science.

  C. A school notice.

D. A travel guide.

64.According to the passage,   .

  A. boys and girls have completely different skills

  B. it is impossible for girls to become a scientist in the future

  C. girls always get higher scores than boys in math

  D. boys may usually do better in building things than girls

65. The writer uses the example of the orange ball to show that

  A. baby boys are cleverer than baby girls[来

  B. baby boys are not interested in shows

  C. baby girls are better at watching different things

  D. baby girls talk at an earlier age than baby boys do

66. The underlined word aggression in paragraph 3 means   .

  A. an angry feeling

It fills me with joy that I am a member of the UN Global Education First Youth Advocacy Group. I have plenty of volunteer experiences and it is from these experiences that I was chosen out of 400 people who wanted to join to serve in this group.

When I finished my middle school, I started volunteering in a few non-governmental organizations. I began to understand a lot about community development. I took part in some projects and activities about the environment, peace and HIV/AIDS.

I had many obstacles(障碍)while volunteering because people don’t think volunteer work is important. People consider volunteering as a waste of time.
